Smart Material-based Circiuts of the multimodal information space (MultiMOD)

The Dresden-based MultiMOD research group is pioneering a novel information processing concept using smart, soft materials. This innovative approach allows for direct processing of multimodal information (physical, chemical, biological) without the need for traditional electronics. The multimodal integrated circuits (ICs) are fundamentally different from existing microelectronics, combining multiple functions at the chip level, including information processing, energy supply, and sensory functions. These systems are highly energy-efficient, require fewer resources in production, and are excellently recyclable. They can be seamlessly integrated into any technical structure using additive manufacturing processes. This technology simplifies system architecture, enables distributed architecture, and provides access to complex, small-scale information-processing systems. Furthermore, it enhances the capabilities of hardware and software-based artificial intelligence. The project's relevant disciplines, including microsystem technology, IT, AI, robotics, and automation, are identified as key technologies for current medical technology development.
