Editorial

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

ich freue mich, mich heute zum ersten Mal im Editorial direkt als neue Nachwuchsgruppenleiterin an Sie zu wenden. Seit Beginn des Jahres arbeite ich am ZfI bzw. an der TU Dresden und habe ein tolles und engagiertes Team angetroffen.

In diesen ersten Monaten haben wir alte Projekte aufgenommen und werden diese weiterführen, wie die Reihe „Courage – Wissen! Sehen! Handeln!“, die wir in der zweiten Jahreshälfte mit einem reichhaltigen Programm bestücken werden. Eine ganz neue Kooperation im Rahmen der Courage Reihe wird unsere Kooperation mit dem Palais Sommer sein. Darüber hinaus haben wir neue Projekte und Initiativen gestartet, die die interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung und Kooperation mit zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteuren stärken und vertiefen werden, und das ZfI beim Verbändetag vorgestellt, zu dem regelmäßig die Ministerin für Gleichstellung und Integration, Petra Köpping, einlädt.

Um die jungen Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen an der TUD und anderen Universitäten miteinander zu vernetzen und einen interdisziplinären Rahmen zu schaffen, startete in diesem Sommersemester erstmalig das ZfI-Nachwuchskolloquium. Das Kolloquium wollen wir in den kommenden Semestern weiterführen, denn die ersten vorgestellten Arbeiten überzeugten mit ihren innovativen Ansätzen im Bereich der Integrationsstudien.

Bevor ich jedoch das Editorial schließe, möchte ich auf die Mitgliederversammlung und das Ideenstudio Ende Juni aufmerksam machen. Weitere Informationen können Sie diesem Newsletter entnehmen.

Und zu guter Letzt möchte ich Sie und Euch ganz herzlich zum ZfI Sommerfest am Samstag, dem 24. August einladen. Wir hoffen auf eine informelle und gelassene Gelegenheit, sich gegenseitig kennenzulernen und jenseits von Arbeitsroutinen ins Gespräch zu kommen.

In der Rubrik „Berichte“ werden wichtige vom ZfI durchgeführte Veranstaltungen des vergangenen Quartals besprochen.

Verschiedene Sprachen in heterogenen Werkstätten  

Vom 5. bis 7. April veranstaltete der Fachverband für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache e.V. (FaDaF) seine 45. Jahrestagung "Deutsch weltweit – der FaDaF zu Gast im Mannheimer Schloss". Ann-Kathrin Kobelt und Rico Ehren vom ZfI berichteten an der Universität Mannheim von Entwicklung, Planung und Erfahrungen bezüglich des zweiten Fachtags “Deutsch für Geflüchtete von Anfang an“ (September 2017). Im Praxisforum „Beruf und Qualifizierung“ ging es um den Erwerb der deutschen Sprache nach Migration und Flucht „von Anfang an“ und auch und insbesondere in (Aus)Bildung und Arbeit. Sie sprachen vor allem über Werkstätten heterogener Perspektiven und ihre Potenziale. Im Forum war zudem Raum für Austausch sowie Diskussion. Auch die nach dem Fachtag eruierten „Handlungsempfehlungen für Deutsch, (Aus)Bildung und Arbeit für Migrant*innen in Dresden“ (ZfI 2018, Veröffentlichung folgt) wurden ansatzweise zur Diskussion gestellt und reflektiert. Großes Interesse bestand auch am (ehrenamtlichen) Engagement in der Stadt Dresden, welches als ein »ganz anderes Gesicht« der Stadt in der medialen Öffentlichkeit nur teilweise zum Tragen kommt.

Bericht zum 8. Verbändetag Integration

In regelmäßigen Abständen lädt die Integrationsministerin Petra Köpping zu den „Verbändegesprächen Integration“ ein, um eine Austauschmöglichkeit für all jene anzubieten, die sich auf kommunaler und städtischer Ebene in die vielfältige und ehrenamtliche Arbeit der Koordination, Begleitung und Beratung von Geflüchteten und Migrant*innen eingebracht haben und einbringen. Der 8. Verbändetag am 21. März stand unter der Frage „Wann ist Integration erfolgreich?“ und diente der Vorstellung der sächsischen Integrationsberichterstattung, die kurz zuvor veröffentlicht wurde. Zudem sprachen als Expertinnen Dr. Cornelia Schu, Geschäftsführerin des Sachverständigenrats deutscher Stiftungen für Integration und Migration (SVR), und Dr. Noa K. Ha vom ZfI.
Im zweiten Teil des Tages bot das ZfI (Dr. Karoline Oehme-Jüngling und Dr. Noa K. Ha) einen Workshop mit der folgenden Fragestellung an: „Welche Schlüssel sind für eine erfolgreiche Integration erforderlich?“ Der Workshop diente dazu, die Teilnehmenden sowohl zu einer Diskussion einzuladen als auch Forschungsbedarfe zu formulieren. In verschiedenen Kleingruppen, die sehr heterogen besetzt waren und die Perspektiven der kommunalen Verwaltung, der Verbände und auch der ehrenamtlich Aktiven versammelten, wurde konstruktiv diskutiert und zum Ende des Workshops die Ergebnisse sich gegenseitig vorgestellt. An dieser Stelle ist festzuhalten, dass alle Gruppen einen sehr wichtigen Schlüssel zur Integration thematisierten: die Aufnahme- und Willkommensbereitschaft der hiesigen Gesellschaft – die oft fehle und daher Integration verhindere und ein gemeinsames Zusammenleben erschwere.

B-Europe: „Für wen sind die Städte Europas?“

Im Rahmen des B-Europe Festivals des Europäischen Zentrums der Künste HELLERAU, dass die Vielfalt, Visionen und Plan B von Europa thematisierte, stellte Stefan Schönfelder, Geschäftsführer der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Sachsen, am 16. Mai Noa Ha die Frage „Für wen sind die Städte Europas?“. Mit Blick auf Europa und Dresden diskutierten sie die postkolonialen Auseinandersetzungen um städtische Erinnerungspolitik, alltägliche Nutzungspraktiken im öffentlichen Raum von marginalisiertem Raum und zukünftige Szenarien für gerechtere und offenere Stadträume und Stadtgesellschaften.

Projekt zu verständlichen Elternbriefen

Am 25. Mai präsentierten Studierende des Erweiterungsfaches Deutsch als Zweitsprache der TU Dresden, Rico Ehren (Studentische Hilfskraft am ZfI), Lisa Gulich und Christin Mehlich, die vorläufigen Ergebnisse des von Dr. Torsten Andreas geleiteten Projekts „Elternbriefe selbstverständlich einfach verständlich“ im Referat für Antidiskriminierung, Migration und Internationales (REFAMI) der Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft Sachsen (GEW). Projektziel ist es, auf Grundlage von Konzepten der einfachen, leichten und verständlichen Sprache Elternbriefe als Instrument der Eltern-Schul-Interaktion zu entwerfen, welche (auch) für Eltern mit unterschiedlichen Herkunftssprachen maximal verständlich und eindeutig sind. Die Präsentation verstand sich als multiperspektivische Feedbackrunde, um die entworfenen Elternbriefe für einen noch ausstehenden Praxistest anzupassen. Eine Veröffentlichung der Projektergebnisse sowie der Elternbriefe ist geplant.

Die Rubrik „Forschung“ stellt ein aktuelles am ZfI bearbeitetes Forschungsprojekt vor und gibt Einblicke in aktuelle Forschungsfragen.

Neue Publikationsreihe des ZfI für Qualifizierungsarbeiten

In einer neuen Publikationsreihe wird das ZfI zukünftig hochwertige Qualifikationsarbeiten veröffentlichen, die im breiten Themenfeld der Integration (Arbeitsmarktintegration, Spracherwerb: DaZ/DaF, Inklusion in der Schule, politische Bildung) entstanden sind und von am ZfI engagierten Hochschullehrer*innen betreut werden. Dieses Anliegen wird von der Gesellschaft von Freunden und Förderern der TU Dresden großzügig gefördert und wir freuen uns, demnächst die ersten Arbeiten als open-access-Publikation auf dem Langzeitrepositorium Qucosa der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek veröffentlichen zu können. An dieser Stelle einen herzlichen Dank an die Gesellschaft von Freunden und Förderern für die Unterstützung. Und – an dieser Stelle die Aufforderung an alle betreuenden Wissenschaftler*innen, sehr gute studentische Abschlussarbeiten für diese Publikationsreihe zu empfehlen.

Forschungsprojekt „Kunst und Kultur in der polarisierten Stadt“

Im Juni startet am Zentrum für Integrationsstudien das Forschungsprojekt „Kunst und Kultur in der polarisierten Stadt. Dresdner Kultureinrichtungen als Vermittelnde zwischen den Polen 'Weltoffenheit' und 'Ethnopluralismus' (KupoS)“. Das einjährige Projekt unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Heike Greschke nimmt die in den letzten Jahren offenbar werdenden gesamtgesellschaftlichen Tendenzen der sozialen Spaltung zum Anlass und untersucht die Bedeutung von Kunst und Kultur im gesellschaftlichen Verständigungsprozess. Mit dem öffentlichen Auftreten von PEGIDA seit Ende 2014 hat in Dresden ein Prozess der Polarisierung eingesetzt, der durch die Reaktionen auf die Ankunft einer vergleichsweise großen Zahl an Geflüchteten im Jahr 2015 noch verstärkt wurde. Wie sich dieser Prozess auf die (politische) Positionierung und das Selbstverständnis der Dresdner Kunst- und Kultureinrichtungen ausgewirkt hat und welche Rolle bzw. welche Positionen sie im gesellschaftlichen Verständigungsprozess einnehmen, untersucht das vorliegende Projekt und leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Bestimmung der Potentiale und Grenzen von Kunst und Kultur als kohäsionsstiftende Vermittlungsinstanzen. Die Maßnahme wird mitfinanziert durch Steuermittel auf der Grundlage des von den Abgeordneten des Sächsischen Landtages beschlossenen Haushaltes.
Zum Projektstart findet am Mittwoch, den 20. Juni, ein Pressegespräch mit Staatsministerin für Wissenschaft und Kunst, Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, statt (9:30-10:30 Uhr, Raum SE1-217, Zellescher 22, Dresden).

Nachrichten aus dem ZfI-Netzwerk

Am Zentrum für Integrationsstudien sind Forscher*innen aus allen fünf Fakultäten des Bereich Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften der TU Dresden und darüber hinaus beteiligt. Nachrichten aus diesem Netzwerk werden in dieser Rubrik zur Verfügung gestellt.

Auslobung 2018: JenDaF e.V. verleiht Hans-Barkowski-Preis  

Der Verein JenDaF e.V. schreibt 2018 den Hans-Barkowski-Preis aus. Er wird jährlich vergeben und richtet sich an Studierende, Wissenschaftler und ehrenamtlich Tätige, die sich in wissenschaftlichen Publikationen, in studentischen Abschlussarbeiten, in Projekten oder in Initiativen im Kontext von Mehrsprachigkeit, Migration, Interkultureller Begegnung oder Deutsch als Zweitsprache engagieren. Wissenschaftliche Beiträge sollten in den vergangenen zwei Jahren veröffentlicht worden sein. Die Bewerbung ist bis zum 30. September möglich.

Forschung zu Migrationserfahrung und Männlichkeit in nigerianischer Literatur

Seit Anfang Mai ist der nigerianische Wissenschaftler Prof. Wumi Raji zu Gast an der Professur für Englische Literaturwissenschaft (Prof. Dr. Stefan Horlacher). Prof. Raji ist Research Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung und Professor für Theaterwissenschaften an der Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Daneben gilt Prof. Rajis Forschungsinteresse den Postcolonial Studies, Black American Literature und besonders den Masculinity Studies, wo er, ausgehend von nigerianischen Migrationsromanen, unterschiedliche Anforderungen und Ansprüche an Maskulinität in unterschiedlichen Kulturräumen wie Afrika, Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten erforscht.
Prof. Rajis aktuelles Projekt zu Männlichkeit, Diaspora und Marginalität in nigerianischer Migrationsliteratur ergänzt die an der Professur für Englische Literaturwissenschaft betriebene Männlichkeitsforschung optimal und wird durch seine Aktualität, gesellschaftliche Relevanz und seinen Einblick in afrikanische Männlichkeiten ein großer Gewinn für die Dresdner Kolleg*innen und Studierenden sein. Konkret fragt Prof. Raji, wie ausgewählte nigerianische Autoren die Migrationserfahrung wiedergeben, wobei eine Konzentration auf die spezifischen Besonderheiten der Männlichkeiten afro-amerikanischer Migranten in westlichen Ländern erfolgt.
Nachdem Prof. Raji einen Artikel zu “Men at the Edge: Margins and Masculinities in Nigerian Migrant Fiction” veröffentlichte, wird er nun die Arbeit an diesem Projekt fortsetzen und auf eine Buchpublikation hinarbeiten. Dabei wird er sich auch aktiv in den akademischen Austausch mit Doktoranden und Postdoktoranden der Anglistik und Amerikanistik einbringen.

Save the date: Fachtagung „Migration, Menschenrechte und Rassismus. Herausforderungen ethischer Bildung“  

Am 29. November findet ab 9:30 Uhr im Deutschen Hygiene Museum Dresden eine Fachtagung zum Thema „Migration, Menschenrechte und Rassismus. Herausforderungen ethischer Bildung“ statt. Die Tagung wird vom Institut für Philosophie der TU Dresden in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Hygiene Museum und dem ZfI veranstaltet und vereint Plenumsvorträge und interaktive Workshops. Zum Abschluss wird es einen öffentlichen Abendvortrag geben. Für diesen ist keine Anmeldung erforderlich. Für die Tagung selbst ist die Anmeldung von Ende August bis zum 1. November möglich und notwendig. Ende August wird außerdem das endgültige Programm veröffentlicht werden.

Studentische Initiativen IDA und RLC beim Uni-Tag 2018 der TU Dresden

Am 2. Juni findet der Tag der offenen Tür, der Uni-Tag der TU Dresden, statt. Dann haben Studieninteressierte, aber auch andere Interessierten von 9:30 bis 15:00 Uhr die Möglichkeit, sich über das Studium in Dresden, die Studienbedingungen und das Studienumfeld zu informieren, um die eigene Studienwahl zu erleichtern oder mehr über die akademische Landschaft in Dresden zu erfahren. Mit dabei sind auch die am ZfI angesiedelten studentischen Initiativen In Dresden Ankommen (IDA) und die Refugee Law Clinic Dresden (RLC), die ihren Stand auf der Festwiese hinter dem Hörsaalzentrum aufbauen werden. An diesem stellen Studierende von IDA ihre Angebote im Bereich der Spracharbeit und Begleitung von Geflüchteten vor, während die studentischen Rechtsberater*innen der RLC über ihre wöchentlich angebotene Rechtsberatung für Geflüchtete informieren.

ZfI-Mitgliederversammlung und Ideenstudio

Am 28. Juni veranstaltet das ZfI seine erste Mitgliederversammlung und lädt dazu herzlich ein. Die Veranstaltung wird zwischen 13:00 und 14:30 Uhr in der August-Bebel-Straße 20 stattfinden. Anschließend zwischen 15:00 und 18:00 Uhr wird ein Ideenstudio stattfinden, das von den ProjectScouts der TU Dresden mitgestaltet wird. Ziel des Ideenstudios ist es, sich über aktuelle Projekte im Bereich der Integrationsforschung an der TU Dresden auszutauschen und neue Ideen für gemeinsame Projekte zu entwickeln. Die Möglichkeit zur Teilnahme besteht nicht nur für Mitglieder des ZfI, sondern auch für diejenigen, die solche noch werden wollen.

Das Programm für die Mitgliederversammlung ist hier einsehbar. Das ZfI bittet darüber hinaus um Anmeldung, die hier möglich ist.

Das Zentrum für Integrationsstudien bei der Langen Nacht der Wissenschaften

Was ist Integration? Wie leben wir zusammen? Was heißt Toleranz? All diese Fragen und noch viele andere versuchen wir am Zentrum für Integrationsstudien zu beantworten. Im Rahmen der Langen Nacht der Wissenschaften öffnet das Zentrum für Integrationsstudien das ‚Labor der Vielfalt‘, das alle Besucher*innen dazu einlädt in entspannter Atmosphäre ins Gespräch zu kommen und gemeinsam Spaß zu haben. Jeder ist willkommen, auf dem Gang des zweiten Stocks des von-Gerber Baus (Raum 269) vielfältige Aktivitäten für jede Altersstufe auszuprobieren und Informationen über die Arbeit des Zentrums zu erhalten. Die Besucher haben u.a. die Möglichkeit am Integrations- und Einbürgerungstest teilzunehmen und zu testen, ob sie die Prüfung bestehen würden, die Zugewanderten den Weg zur deutschen Staatsbürgerschaft ebnet. Für die Kleinsten wird es eine Ausmalstation, eine Kostümbar und Improvisationspuppentheater geben. Auch die Mitarbeiter*innen der Refugee Law Clinic (ehrenamtliche Rechtsberatung für Geflüchtete) und der Initiative In Dresden ankommen (Sprachkurse und Begleitung für Geflüchtete) werden vor Ort sein und ihre Angebote für Interessierte vorstellen. Überdies wollen die Mitarbeiter*innen des Zentrums mit Ihnen ins Gespräch zum Thema Integration kommen, weshalb einige spannende Fragen und Spiele auf die Besucher*innen warten. Der Spaß soll dabei nicht zu kurz kommen!

Courage die Dritte!  

Die Veranstaltungsreihe „Courage – Wissen! Sehen! Handeln!“ wird in 2018 zum dritten Mal in Folge stattfinden und auf sehr vielfältige Weise sowohl in der Universität als auch in der Dresdner Stadtgesellschaft Fragen zu Diskriminierung und Rassismus thematisieren. Bestehende Kooperationen, wie z.B. mit der DVB, werden fortgeführt und erweitert. So ist wieder ein Bürgergespräch in einer Dresdner Straßenbahn in Planung und in einem Medienworkshop werden Dresdner Kinder und Jugendliche einen Clip für das Fahrgastfernsehen produzieren. Außerdem  gehen wir ganz neue Kooperationen ein, wie mit der Volkshochschule Dresden, die uns sowohl ihre Räume für Vorträge zur Verfügung stellt als auch uns für die Reihe mitreden.dd gewonnen hat. Eine gänzlich neue Kooperation wird es in diesem Jahr mit dem Festival ‚Palais Sommer‘ geben, das umsonst und draußen im Garten des Japanischen Palais in den Sommermonaten stattfinden wird. Im Rahmen der Kooperation werden wir Palais Gespräche organisieren, die sich mit Rassismus, Menschlichkeit, Sicherheit und Protesten im öffentlichen Raum sowie Beleidigungen, Hassrede und Kommunikation in einer sich polarisierenden Gesellschaft befassen.
Es wird also viele spannende Programmpunkte wie Vorträge, Workshops, Filmvorführungen und Diskussionen geben. Außerdem machen wir auf Kulturveranstaltungen in Dresden und Umgebung aufmerksam, welche sich mit diesen Themen beschäftigen. Dieses Kulturprogramm können Sie aktiv mitgestalten, indem Sie uns hier über ihr Veranstaltungsangebot informieren. Wir hoffen, in diesem Jahr wieder Impulse für einen respektvollen Umgang in unserer Verschiedenheit zu geben.

Hygiene Museum eröffnet die Ausstellung „Rassismus. Die Erfindung von Menschenrassen“ – wir kooperieren im Rahmen der Veranstaltungsreihe zu „Dekolonisierung“

Am 18. Mai eröffnete die Ausstellung „Rassismus. Die Erfindung von Menschenrassen“ im Deutschen Hygiene Museum Dresden. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung wird das ZfI für eine Veranstaltungsreihe zu „Dekolonisierung“ mit Prof. Dr. Fatima El-Tayeb, Professorin für Literatur und Ethnic Studies an der University of California, San Diego, und dem Hygiene-Museum Dresden kooperieren. Die Veranstaltungsreihe stellt die Frage, wie koloniales Erbe und rassistische Weltbilder unser Denken und Handeln prägen, und zeigt, wo und wie alternative Wissensmodelle entstehen. Folgende Termine werden stattfinden:

• 23. August, Donnerstag, 19:00 Uhr: Öffentliche Räume dekolonisieren – Wem gehört die Stadt?
•  6. September, Donnerstag, 19:00 Uhr: Institutionen dekolonisieren – Wessen  Geschichte(n) erinnern wir?
• 13. September, Donnerstag, 19:00 Uhr: Diskurse dekolonisieren – wer spricht, wer wird gehört?

Das ZfI feiert den Sommer!

Am Samstag, den 24. August laden wir ab 17:00 Uhr zum Sommerfest auf dem TU Campus ein! Wir freuen uns, mit Ihnen und Euch den Sommer zu feiern und die Gelegenheit zum gegenseitigen Kennenlernen zu nutzen.

Letzte Termine des ZfI-Nachwuchskolloquiums finden im Juni statt

In diesem Sommersemester findet zum ersten Mal das ZfI-Nachwuchskolloquium an drei Werkstatttagen mit jeweils drei Vorträgen und Diskussionen statt. Zentrales Ziel des Nachwuchskolloquiums ist die Vorstellung und Diskussion der Forschungsarbeiten von Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen – Doktorand*innen und Postdoktorand*innen – im Spektrum der Integrationsstudien sowie die Vernetzung untereinander. Die jeweiligen geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fachdisziplinen stellen ihren eigenen Zugang vor, der in einem interdisziplinären Kontext gemeinsam reflektiert und diskutiert wird.
Den Auftakt bildeten am 27. April die Arbeiten von Corinna Land, TU Dresden, zu „Landkonflikte und Antworten „von unten“: Migration, Widerstand und Inkorporierung“, Diana Dressler, TU Dresden, „Fremdzwang und Selbstzwang: Mütterbilder im Kontext transstaatlicher Migration“ und Raimund Harloff, TU/HTWK, „Konstruktion unbegleiteter minderjähriger Flüchtlinge durch deren institutionelles Betreuungsumfeld“.
Am 1. Juni ging es mit Ann-Kathrin Kobelt, TU Dresden, zu „‚Muss ich mich hier selber anlügen? Also wenn ich da bin […] dann bin ich zu mir fremd.‘ – Fremdheit in beruflich eingesetzter Zwei- und Mehrsprachigkeit“, dann Laura Rind-Menzel, TU Dresden, zu „Politischer Bildung als Einbürgerungsangebot?“ und Swen Steinberg, TU Dresden, zu „Wissen und Migration. Überlegungen aus historischer Perspektive“ weiter.
Den Abschluss werden am 8. Juni dann die Arbeiten von Lisa Janotta, TU Dresden, zu „Moralisierungen und Legitimationen der deutschen Grenze(n). Eine (post-)nationalstaatliche Perspektive“ und Steffen Heidrich, TU Dresden, zu „Das Integrationsparadoxon – gewünschtes und praktiziertes jüdisches Leben im postmigrantischen Deutschland“ bilden.

Das ZfI beim Gastmahl „Dresden isst bunt“

Am 19. Juni findet das jährliche Gastmahl „Dresden isst bunt“ auf dem Dresdner Neumarkt statt. Von 17:00-20:00 Uhr treffen sich Menschen, um miteinander zu reden, sich kennenzulernen und natürlich miteinander zu essen. Mitgebracht werden sollten eigene Teller und Besteck sowie Lieblingsspeise und/oder Getränk. Auch das Zentrum für Integrationsstudien der TU Dresden wird mit einem eigenen Tisch an dieser Veranstaltung teilnehmen. Wir möchten gerne mit Ihnen über Integration und Vielfalt ins Gespräch kommen und Ihnen die Arbeit dieser interdisziplinären Forschungseinrichtung vorstellen.

Editorial

Dear Sirs and Madams,

I am glad to speak to you directly in the editorial for the first time as the new research group leader. Since the beginning of this year, I am working at the ZfI or rather at the TU Dresden and I encountered a great and engaged team.

In these first months, we took up old projects and we will continue them, e.g. the series “Courage – Wissen! Sehen! Handeln!” (“Courage – Know! See! Act!”), which we will equip with an extensive programme in the second half of the year. In the context of the Courage series, there will be a completely new cooperation partner through our cooperation with the Palais Sommer. Furthermore, we started new projects and initiatives that will strengthen and deepen the interdisciplinary direction and cooperation with civic actors, and we presented the ZfI on the Association Day, for which the State Minister for the Department of Equal Opportunities and Integration, Petra Köpping, invites regularly.

In order to connect the young scientists of the TUD and other universities with each other and to create an interdisciplinary framework, the ZfI-young researchers’ colloquium started for the first time in this summer term. We want to continue this colloquium in the coming semesters, because the first presented works were convincing concerning their innovative approaches in the field of the integration research.

Before closing the editorial, I want to draw your attention to the general assembly and the studio of ideas at the end of June. You can find further information on this in this newsletter.

Last but not least, I want to sincerely invite you to the ZfI summer party on Saturday, 24th August. We hope for an informal and relaxed opportunity to get to know and to talk to each other beyond work routines.

Important events of the last quarter, which were organised by the ZfI, will be discussed in the category “Reports”.

Different languages in heterogeneous factories  

From 5^th to 7^th April, the Fachverband für Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache e.V. (FaDaF) hosted its 45^th annual conference named “Deutsch weltweit – der FaDaF zu Gast im Mannheimer Schloss“ (“German worldwide – the FaDaF as a guest at the Mannheim castle“). In the University of Mannheim, Ann-Kathrin Kobelt and Rico Ehren of the ZfI reported on development, planning and experiences relating to the second conference “Deutsch für Geflüchtete von Anfang an“ (“German for refugees from the word go“) (September 2017). In a practical panel called “occupation and qualification“, they talked about the acquisition of the German language after migration and flight “from the word go“ and especially in education and labour (market). Particularly, they spoke about heterogeneous factories and their capabilities. They also compared notes and started into a discussion with interested people. Furthermore, they put up elicited recommendations for action in the context of German, education and work for migrants in Dresden, which were developed after the conference in September 2017 (ZfI 2018, publication follows), for discussion and reflection in a rudimentary way. Large attention was displayed on the (voluntary) commitment, which makes all the difference in the city of Dresden but is rarely shown to the public by media.

Report on the 8^th Association Day Integration

The State Minister for the Department of Equal Opportunities and Integration, Petra Köpping, regularly invites for the “Verbändegespräche Integration” (“Association talks on integration”), in order to offer a possibility for exchange to all those who participated and participate on the local as well as the urban level in the voluntary work concerning the coordination, support and advice of refugees and migrants. The 8^th Association Day on 21^st March focussed on the question “When is integration successful?” and served the presentation of the Saxon integration reporting that was published recently. Furthermore, Dr Cornelia Schu, director of The Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration, and Dr Noa K. Ha of the ZfI spoke as experts.During the second part of the day, the ZfI (Dr Karoline Oehme-Jüngling and Dr Noa K. Ha) offered a workshop concerning the following question: “Which keys are needed for a successful integration?” The workshop aimed at inviting the participants to a discussion as well as formulating research needs. In different small groups, which were quite heterogeneous and which collected the perspectives of the local administration, the associations, and those of the volunteers, the participants discussed constructively and they presented their results to the others at the end of the workshop. Here it is to say that all groups mentioned a very important key for integration: the will of the local society to welcome and include those who arrive here – which would be missing often and thus impeding integration and making a life together difficult.

B-Europe: “For whom are Europe’s cities?”

In the context of the B-Europe festival of the European Center for the Arts HELLERAU, which makes diversity, vision and plan B of Europe subject of discussion, Stefan Schönfelder, manager of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Saxony, asked Noa Ha on 16^th Mai “For whom are Europe’s cities?” Having a look on Europe and Dresden, they discussed the postcolonial disputes about urban politics of remembrance, the everyday use of marginalised space in the public space, and future scenarios for fairer and more open urban spaces and societies.

Project on understandable letters to parents

On 25^th May, students of the complementary studies of German as a second language of the TU Dresden, Rico Ehren (student assistant at the ZfI), Lisa Gulich und Christin Mehlich, presented the temporary outcomes of the project “Elternbriefe selbstverständlich einfach verständlich“ (“Letters to parents self-evidently simple and understandable“)  at the Department for antidiscrimination, migration and international affairs (REFAMI), which belongs to the labour union for education and science Saxony (GEW). The aim of the project is to create letters to parents as instruments of a school-parent-interaction based on concepts of simple and understandable language. Those letters to parents are supposed to be unambiguously understandable for parents with different languages of origin. The presentation was meant to be a platform for feedback and discussion in order to modify the created letters to parents for a field test. A publication of the project outcomes is planned.​

New publication series for qualification works at the ZfI

In the future, the ZfI will publish high-grade qualification works, which were developed in the wide field of “integration” (labour market integration, language acquisition: German as a second and as a foreign language, inclusion in school, political education) and are supervised by university teachers that are employed at the ZfI. This matter is generously supported by the Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden e.V., and we are looking forward to publishing the first works as open-access-publications on the platform Qucosa of the Saxon Landesbibliothek. At this point a warm thanks to the Association of Friends and Sponsors for the support and an invitation to all supervising scientists to recommend very good student theses for this publication series.

Research Project “Art and Culture in the Polarised City”

In June 2018, the Center for Integration Research will launch the research project “Art and culture in the polarised city. Dresden’s cultural institutions as mediators between the poles 'cosmopolitanism' and 'ethnopluralism' (KupoS)”. The one-year project under the direction of Prof Heike Greschke takes the societal tendencies of social divisions that have become apparent in recent years as an opportunity and examines the significance of art and culture in the process of social understanding. With the public appearance of PEGIDA since the end of 2014, a process of polarisation has begun in Dresden, which was intensified by the reactions to the arrival of a comparatively large number of refugees in 2015. How this process has affected the (political) positioning and self-image of the Dresden arts and cultural institutions and what role or positions they take in the process of social understanding is examined in this project and thus, it contributes to determining the potentials and limitations of art and culture as cohesion-mediating intermediaries. The measure is co-financed by the Free State of Saxony.
At the start of the project, a press conference with the Minister of State for Science and Arts, Dr Eva-Maria Stange, will take place on Wednesday, 20^th June (9:30-10:30, room SE1-217, Zellescher Weg 22, Dresden).

Offer of a reward 2018: JenDaF e.V. confers Hans-Barkowski-Price

The association JenDaF e.V. tenders the Hans-Barkowski-Price in 2018. The price is conferred annually and addressed to students, scientists and volunteers engaged in scientific publications, student thesis, projects, or initiatives in the context of multilingualism, migration, intercultural encounter, or German as a second language. Scientific contributions should have been published in the last two years. The application is possible until the 30^th September.

Research on migration experience and masculinity in Nigerian literature

Since the beginning of Mai, Prof Wumi Raji is a guest at the Chair of English Literatures (Prof Stefan Horlacher). Prof Raji is a Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation and professor for dramatics at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Furthermore, Prof Raji is interested in the Postcolonial Studies, Black American Literature and especially the Masculinity Studies, where he, starting with Nigerian novels about migration, explores different demands and claims on masculinity in different culture areas such as Africa, Europe, and the United States.
Prof Raji’s recent project on masculinity, diaspora, and marginality in Nigerian migration literature complements the research on masculinity of the Chair of English Literatures optimally and will be a great benefit for the Dresden colleagues and students because of its topicality, social relevance, and insight into African masculinities. Precisely, Prof Raji asks, how selected Nigerian authors report on the migration experience thereby concentrating on the specific features of masculinities of Afro-American migrants in western countries.
After publishing an article on “Men at the Edge: Margins and Masculinities in Nigerian Migrant Fiction”, Prof Raji will now continue to work on this project and work toward a book publication. Thereby, he will also participate actively in the academic exchange with PHDs and postdocs of the English and American Studies.

Save the date: Conference “Migration, Menschenrechte und Rassismus. Herausforderungen ethischer Bildung”

A conference concerning the topic “Migration, Menschenrechte und Rassismus. Herausforderungen ethischer Bildung” (“Migration, Human Rights, and Racism. Challenges of ethical Education”) will take place on 29^th November from 9:30am on in the Deutsches Hygiene Museum Dresden. The conference is organised by the Institute of Philosophy of the TU Dresden in cooperation with the Deutsches Hygiene Museum and the ZfI and unites lectures and interactive workshops. At the end, there will be a public evening lecture. For this, no registration is necessary. For the conference itself, the registration is necessary and possible from the end of August until 1^st November. Furthermore, the final programme will also be published at the end of August.

Student initiatives IDA and RLC at the University Day 2018 of the TU Dresden

On 2^nd June, the open house day, the University Day of the TU Dresden, will take place. Then, prospective students but also other interested people will have the possibility between 9:30am and 3:00pm to inform themselves about studying in Dresden, the study conditions, and the study environment, in order to ease their choice of study or learn more about the academic landscape in Dresden. The student initiatives belonging to the ZfI In Dresden Ankommen (IDA) and the Refugee Law Clinic Dresden (RLC) will be present at that day and they will build up their stand on the fairground behind the auditorium centre. There, students of IDA will present their offers in the field of the language work with and the support of refugees, while the student legal advisors of the RLC will inform about their weekly offered legal advice for refugees.

ZfI general meeting and studio of ideas

On 28^th June, the ZfI organises its first general meeting and sincerely invites you to this. The event will take place between 1:00 and 2:30pm at the August-Bebel-Straße 20. Afterwards between 3:00 and 6:00pm, there will be a studio of ideas shaped by ProjectScouts of the TU Dresden. The studio of ideas aims at an exchange about recent projects in the field of the integration research at the TU Dresden and the development of new ideas for joint projects. The participation is not only possible for members of the ZfI but also for those planning to become members.

The Center for Integration Research at the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften (Dresden Science Night)

What is integration? How do we live together? What does tolerance mean? All these questions and many more are tried to be answered at the “Center for Integration Research”. In the context of the Dresden Science Night, the Center for Integration Research opens the “Labor der Vielfalt” (“Lab of Diversity”) that invites all visitors to get into contact with each other and have fun together in a relaxed atmosphere. Everybody is welcomed to try out diverse activities for every age and get information about the work of the center on the second floor of the von-Gerber-Bau (room 269). Among other things, visitors have the possibility to participate in the integration and citizenship test and to find out, if they would pass this test that paves the way to the German citizenship for immigrants. For the youngest, there will be a paint station, a costume bar, and an improvised puppet theatre. Furthermore, staff of the “Refugee Law Clinic” (voluntary legal advice for refugees) and the “Initiative In Dresden ankommen” (language courses and support for refugees) will be there and will present their offers to interested visitors. Moreover, the staff members of the center want to discuss the topic of integration with you. Thus, many exciting questions and games await the visitors, but fun shall not be missed out!

Courage the third!

The event series “Courage – Wissen! Sehen! Handeln!” (“Courage – Know! See! Act!”) will take place 2018 for the third time in a row and it will make questions on discrimination and racism subject of discussion in the university as well as in the Dresden society in a number of ways. Existing cooperations, e.g. with the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe, will be continued and expanded. Thus, we are planning a citizen talk in a tram again, and children and adolescents of Dresden will produce a clip for the TV on the trams in the context of a media workshop. Furthermore, we are entering completely new cooperations, e.g. with the adult education centre of Dresden that provides us its rooms for lectures and convinced us of its series “mitreden.dd”. Another new cooperation in this year will be with the festival “Palais Sommer”, which is free of charge and will take place in the garden outside of the Japanisches Palais during the summer months. In the context of this cooperation, we will organise Palais Gespräche (talks in the Palais) that will deal with racism, humanity, security and protests in the public space as well as with insults, hate speech and communication in a polarising society.
Thus, there will be many exciting programme items such as lectures, workshops, film screenings, and discussions. Furthermore, we want to draw attention to cultural events in Dresden and its surrounding area, which deal with those topics. You can actively shape this cultural programme together with us by informing us here about your event offer. We hope to give impulses for a respectful social interaction in our diversity again this year.

Deutsches Hygiene-Museum opens the exhibition “Rassismus. Die Erfindung von Menschenrassen“ – we cooperate in the context of the event series about “Dekolonisierung”

The exhibition “Rassismus. Die Erfindung von Menschenrassen” (“Racism. The Invention of Human Races”) opened in the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum on 18^th Mai. In the context of this exhibition, the ZfI will cooperate with Dr Fatima El-Tayeb, professor of literature and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego, and the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum for an event series about “Dekolonisierung” (“Decolonisation”). This event series asks, how the colonial heritage and racist worldviews shape our thoughts and actions, and it shows where and how alternative knowledge models develop. The following events will take place:

• 23^rd August, Thursday, 7:00pm: Öffentliche Räume dekolonisieren – Wem gehört die Stadt? (Decolonising public spaces – who owns the city?)
• 6^th September, Thursday, 7:00pm: Institutionen dekolonisieren – Wessen Geschichte(n) erinnern wir? (Decolonising institutions – whose (hi)story do we remember?)
• 13^th September, Thursday, 7:00pm: Diskurse dekolonisieren – wer spricht, wer wird gehört? (Decolonising discourses – who speaks, who is heard?)

Last dates of the ZfI-junior researchers’ colloquium take place in June

The ZfI-junior researchers’ colloquium takes place in this summer term for the first time on three workshop days each consisting of three lectures and discussions. The central aim of the junior researchers’ colloquium is the presentation of and discussion about the research works of young scientists – PhD students and postdocs – in the field of the integration research, as well as the networking among each other. The humanistic and sociological subject areas present their own approach, which will be reflected and discussed together in an interdisciplinary context.
On 27^th April, the works of Corinna Land, TU Dresden, about “Landkonflikte und Antworten “von unten”: Migration, Widerstand und Inkorporierung” (“Land conflicts and answers “from below”: Migration, resistance and incorporation”), Diana Dressler, TU Dresden, “Fremdzwang und Selbstzwang: Mütterbilder im Kontext transstaatlicher Migration” (“Foreign and self-pressure: Mother images in the context of transstate migration”), and Raimund Harloff, TU/HTWK, “Konstruktion unbegleiteter minderjähriger Flüchtlinge durch deren institutionelles Betreuungsumfeld” (“Construction of unaccompanied underage refugees by their institutional care environment”) started the colloquium.
On 1^st June, Ann-Kathrin Kobelt, TU Dresden, on “‘Muss ich mich hier selber anlügen? Also wenn ich da bin […] dann bin ich zu mir fremd.‘ – Fremdheit in beruflich eingesetzter Zwei- und Mehrsprachigkeit“ (“’Do I have to lie to myself here? Well, when I am there […] I am alien to myself.’ – Foreignness in professionally used bi- and multilingualism”), then Laura Rind-Menzel, TU Dresden, on “Politische Bildung als Einbürgerungsangebot” (“Political education as an offer for naturalisation?”), and Swen Steinberg, TU Dresden, on “Wissen und Migration. Überlegungen aus historischer Perspektive” (“Knowledge and migration. Considerations from an historic perspective”) followed.
The colloquium will then be closed on 8^th June with the works of Lisa Janotta, TU Dresden, on “Moralisierungen und Legitimationen der deutschen Grenze(n). Eine (post-)nationalstaatliche Perspektive” (“Moralisations and legitimations of the German border(s). A (post-)nation state perspective”) and Steffen Heidrich, TU Dresden, on “Das Integrationsparadoxon – gewünschtes und praktiziertes jüdisches Leben im postmigrantischen Deutschland” (“The integration paradox – wished and practised Jewish life in post-migrant Germany“).

The ZfI at the banquet “Dresden isst bunt”

On 19^th June, the banquet “Dresden Isst Bunt” will take place on the Neumarkt in Dresden. From 5:00-8:00pm people will meet to talk, get know each other and of course eat with each other. You should bring own plates and cutlery as well as your favourite food and drink. The Center for Integration Research will also participate in this event with its own table. We would like to talk to you about integration and diversity and present to you the work of this interdisciplinary research institution.
